Atlanta Influences Everything

A reflection from the June 2026 Salon.

At our June Conscious Wealth Salon, we welcomed Bem Joiner for a conversation about culture, identity, and what it really means for a city to influence the world.

The morning centered around a question:

How does Atlanta influence everything?

At first, the question sounded like a bold claim. By the end of the conversation, it felt more like an invitation.

Bem began by sharing the story behind the phrase Atlanta Influences Everything. It wasn't born out of civic pride. It was born out of rejection.

While pitching an experiential marketing campaign to Nike, Bem and his team were told Atlanta simply wasn't a top-tier city. It didn't have the density of New York. It didn't have the landmarks of Chicago. It didn't fit the model Nike used to decide where to invest.

Walking away from that meeting, Bem found himself thinking:

Maybe Atlanta doesn't look like those cities.
But it influences everything.

That single thought became a movement.

As the conversation unfolded, Bem explained that Atlanta's influence rests on three pillars.

Civic. Corporate. Culture.

The Civil Rights Movement gave the world the moral leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Corporate Atlanta demonstrated that business could become a civic partner, with companies like Coca-Cola helping shape not only the city's economy, but its identity.

And then there is culture. Music. Film. Language. Fashion. Ideas.

Atlanta has become one of the world's great cultural exporters, not because someone declared it to be, but because generations of people created something worth paying attention to.

Yet Bem was careful not to romanticize the story. For all of Atlanta's influence, he reminded us that the city continues to wrestle with profound challenges. Economic mobility remains among the lowest in the country. Opportunity is unevenly distributed. The same city that shapes global culture also asks difficult questions about who gets to participate in its success.

That tension became one of the most compelling moments of the morning.

Influence alone is not enough. It has to be stewarded.

Later in the conversation, Bem offered an analogy that stayed with many of us.

He described the creative economy as cartilage. Most people never notice it. Until it's gone.Cartilage quietly allows the body to move without friction. Creativity does something similar for a city. It connects people. Generates ideas. Creates opportunity. Gives communities their identity.

Without it, progress becomes harder. Everything begins to rub against itself.

As the conversation drew to a close, Bem returned to a phrase that surfaced throughout the morning: social capital.

Atlanta has earned enormous influence. The challenge now is learning how to convert that influence into lasting opportunity, for the people who call it home.

At Conscious Wealth, we often talk about wealth as something that extends beyond financial assets. Communities accumulate wealth, too. In their stories. In their culture. In the relationships they nurture. And perhaps the greatest measure of a city's wealth is how intentionally it uses that influence to create opportunity for the next generation.

We spend much of our time discussing investments, strategy, and long-term planning. Conversations like this remind us that the internal work of leadership often shapes outcomes long before any financial decision does.
